Soil Science Institute II - Soil Geomorphology (000142)

Soil Science Institute II is offered in even numbered years. Soil Science Institute I is offered in odd numbered years.

Overview 

This training presents an integrated earth science approach to soils and geomorphology. The purpose is to expand the field skills and conceptual knowledge needed to generate and deliver scientifically accurate soil geomorphology and soil inventory products. The course provides a comprehensive treatment of key soil geomorphic principles and practices including process geomorphology, soil hydrology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, soil genesis and classification, appropriate tools (traditional and emerging), and related current topics in soil science.

Objectives 

  • Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
  • Identify types of geomorphic process environments, landforms, formation processes, and composition and apply this knowledge to soil survey development and delivery.
  • Explain the interrelationships of ecological factors to soil geomorphology.
  • Identify soil patterns as controlled by soil landscape hydrology and their relations to water quality, waste management, and hydric soils.
  • Discuss spatial distribution and the age, both relative and absolute, of geomorphic surfaces and their relationships to landforms, soil processes, soil patterns, and ecological influences.
  • Identify types of earth materials, sediment bodies, and stratigraphic relationships as they relate to soil genesis.
  • Apply established and emerging technologies in soil science and better understand the literature regarding soil geomorphic information.

Prerequisites 

Completion of NEDC 000012 – Basic Soil Survey – Field and Lab.

Duration 

3 weeks

Target Audience 

Any soil scientists and others who meet the prerequisite listed above and who can benefit from this kind of formal training. Attendance of NRCS employees requires nomination by the State Soil Scientist.

Attendance of NRCS employees requires nomination by the State Soil Scientist or MLRA Office Leader and the concurrence of the State Conservationist.
