Digital Soil Survey Data Management and Editing (000144)

Overview

This course will provide training in the use of ArcGIS software for on-screen soil survey drafting, editing and quality control to produce quality consistent spatial data for ultimate certification and delivery to the Soil Data Warehouse. Training will focus on equipping soil survey project offices to efficiently produce quality products that will meet Soil Survey Geographic Databases (SSURGO) standards. Training will cover advanced features of the most current version of ESRI ArcGIS 9.X.

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to use ArcGIS 9.X to:

  1. Setup geo databases with topology, import or create data layers, and set up the map environment in preparation for creating new soil surveys or editing existing digital soils data.
  2. Draft and revise soil mapping on-screen in combination with appropriate data sets to meet national standards.
  3. Import, create and display geo-referenced information (field notes, transects, etc.) used to validate soil map accuracy.
  4. Apply spatial data management procedures as presented in the training.

Prerequisites

  • Learning ArcGIS 9.X (ESRI Virtual Campus, online), Introduction to ArcGIS I (NCGC instructor-led) or equivalent experience
  • Access to ArcGIS 9.X ArcInfo Workstation and Desktop at duty station.

Target Audience

Soil Scientists at GS-5 level and higher actively involved in soil survey development or update and staff providing soil survey GIS support .
