Soil Correlation (000036)

Overview

This course covers present practices and philosophy in soil classification and correlation. It includes lectures, discussions, and problem solving.

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • define soil correlation and list the steps in the correlation process
  • use soil descriptions and laboratory data to properly classify soils according to Soil taxonomy
  • apply the procedures and conventions for designing, naming, and describing map units
  • identify the documentation needed for soil correlation
  • use basic statistical methods to analyze data
  • use NASIS in the correlation process

Prerequisites

Minimum of 2 years of soil survey field mapping experience and knowledge of:

  • soil taxonomy
  • National Soil Survey Handbook
  • Soil Survey Manual
  • Basic NASIS functions

1 week

Target Audience

Soil scientists: (1) who have not had similar soil correlation training, and (2) who wish to update soil correlation skills due to changes in technology, Attendees are generally National Cooperative Soil Survey Soil Scientists at the GS-7 through GS-11 levels.
