Correlation and Management of MLRA Soil Surveys (000094)

Overview

This training is designed for NRCS and Cooperator soil scientists in the National Cooperative Soil Survey who are working on soil surveys at the MLRA (Major Land Resource Area) or other region level. Participants, upon completion of this course, will be able to explain the concepts and methods used to initiate, develop, and effectively manage project soil surveys.

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • analyze and evaluate needs for existing soil surveys
  • develop an MLRA or other region project plan
  • describe the roles and responsibilities of the MLRA Project Leader, MO office personnel, state soil scientist, and sub-set leader
  • apply MLRA Standards and Procedures to:
    • gather and evaluate historical and other reference material
    • establish methods for consistency in data gathering, summary, and testing
    • conduct progressive correlation
    • maintain and update OSEDs
    • develop SSURGO products
    • utilize NASIS for correlations, legend development, etc.
    • prepare soil data product delivery in various formats including electronic and traditional methods
  • utilize new technology for MLRA and other region project development and delivery

Prerequisites

Basic Soil Survey – Field and Lab and Soil Correlation. A working knowledge of NASIS is recommended

Duration

4 days

Target Audience

NRCS and Cooperator soil scientists with 3 years or more experience in project soil survey work.  All Soil Survey Project  leaders, State Soil Scientists, Soil Data Quality Specialist, and MLRA Office Leaders should attend this training.
