NASIS - Soil Interpretations (NRCS-NEDC-000182)

Overview

Soil survey interpretations predict soil behavior for specified soil uses and under specified soil management practices. The ability to understand the relationships of soil properties and develop the criteria for soil interpretations is valuable for all soil scientists. NASIS provides powerful tools that give soil scientists and others the capabilities to provide soil information and interpretations to resolve complex natural resource issues. These tools contain new technologies such as NASIS interpretation generator and the use of “fuzzy logic”. Skills in the use and applications of these tools are essential to achieve full benefit from the implementation and application of NASIS.
This training will provide soil scientists and others with skills needed to develop soil interpretation criteria and to create, edit, and maintain interpretations within NASIS and to apply these interpretations resolve to natural resource related issues.

Objectives

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between soil properties and interpretations
  • Develop Soil Interpretation Criteria
  • Understand NASIS Interpretation Methodology
  • Understand fuzzy logic and apply the fuzzy system application to soil interpretations
  • Understand the three component concept of the soil interpretation
  • Create simple soil interpretations using the NASIS interpretative subsystem.
  • Identify methods of reporting NASIS interpretive reports
  • Understand where to document developed interpretations

Prerequisites and Recommendation

Basic NASIS.

Duration

3 days.

Eligibility

State Office, Area/Resource Soil Scientists, and Soil Survey Project Leaders at the GS-9 through GS-13 levels who are or will be responsible for delivering State and local interpretations to met NRCS programmatic and technical soil services obligations.

Equipment and Materials

For each participant:

  • NASIS Interpretations Technical Reference. (Supplied by instructor)
