Boot Camp First Session

Results of a recent listening session closing out the April session of the NRCS Conservation Boot Camp show that participants are almost universally pleased with the Oklahoma City training location. Jerry Williams, Boot Camp Coordinator for the NRCS National Employee Development Center, received some interesting comments about the training from participants:

  • “I never realized the importance of networking and contacts.”
  • “It’s great to go through the entire Planning Process without being driven by programs.”
  • “I now see how important it is to work closely with the landowner.”
  • “I came here thinking I knew a lot. The most important thing I learned over the three weeks here is that I learned how little I know.”
Boot Camp attendees also favorably noted that the Oklahoma City training location has easy walking access to nearby restaurants, exercise trails, and a low-cost trolley to ride.

Meet the new FY-08 Conservation Boot Camp Instructor Cadre. They come from across United States, ranging from California to Maryland. They hold various positions in the agency and they are all actively involved in the support of conservation planning. And above all, they all come with great enthusiasm for doing the job. The fifteen new instructors have finished one week of training designed to sharpen and enhance their instructing skills. They also spent two weeks reviewing training materials and practicing the delivery of the training lesson plans. They will work in teams of five to deliver five three-week sessions of Conservation Boot Camp, beginning in April and ending in August or September. All sessions are to be delivered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. NRCS and the National Employee Development Center thank all of these new instructors, and especially their states that sent them, for the sacrifices they are making and the time they are devoting to NRCS to carry out the important task of training new employees the correct techniques they need to carry out our mission of helping people help the land. .
